InCirculation - Issue Archive

I was pleased to be asked to write a column for InCirculation Magazine on the "monetisation model" that I'd developed with Craig Hanna of e-consultancy. We'd been engaged by one of the UK's leading publishers to work with their senior teams to incorporate digital revenue streams into their daily activities. This model was the result - a workshop-based approach that takes a structured approach together with brainstorming, forming and evaluative techniques.

Here's the pdf archive of the article.

My thanks to Barclaycard for their welcome at their Internet team's Innovation Awayday on Friday. I enjoyed presenting on "the Working Web" - a development of 'Web2.0' which takes a customer-centric perspective on the issues for major brands in an era when the web is expected to work as promised.

cScape : Thought Leadership Workshop

I've known the good folk at cScape for many years and recently they've been making a splash with the launch of their Customer Engagement Unit, headed by Richard Sedley. It was my pleasure therefore to open their Thought Leadership Workshop on the topic of the migration "From User Experience to Customer Engagement". The Brewery on Chiswell Street, EC1 is a great venue and the audience of some 100 people was enthusiastic, engaged (no pun!) and eclectic.

Write-ups of the event are available from cScape.

“Internet and digital technologies: their role in engaging the next generation” - British Council's Global Leadership Team

home-logo-top-bar.jpg

I was pleased to be asked to address the Global Leadership Team of the British Council at their biannual GLT summit. The GLT comprises the UK directorate as well as the Country Directors, some 35 people in total, and they spent a couple of hours on the topic. In addition to a presentation delivered in London the session was webcast to the offices globally, and the Q&A session included some from 'web attendees' in addition to the GLT.

UK Emetrics Summit

The agenda for the Emetrics Summit in London (29-30 March 2007) has been released and I'm pleased to be providing a succinct contribution to the proceedings:

You are well aware of the value of web analytics. Now it's time for the insider's look at what's really worth pursuing and what should be avoided. Ian's challenge to clients, readers etc is to start from 'actionable scenarios' when implementing emetrics systems (especially the very challenging, enterprise-scale ones) and how to ensure that the business focuses upon actions and not 'analysis-paralysis'. Ian takes a look at pragmatic considerations for very senior marketers and commercial people, and provides a view of how emetrics is seen, valued, abused and lauded around the board table.

It's shaping up to be a really interesting couple of days with some great speakers. Worth attending just for the networking and insight opportunities.

Expect some good information too. As Jim Sterne said (rather severely) to all speakers:

As I've said previously, this audience pretty much understands the what - they want insight into the how...

Should be a fun event!

I'm pleased to have been asked to host the March event, where I'll be looking at the emerging trends that should be of interest, concern or excitement to internet professionals.

Serco win contract to deliver Business Link service for London

The LDA have announced that Serco have been selected to run the capital's small business support unit in a three year deal worth £60 of public funding.

Business Link for London Limited (BL4L), the not for profit company established to deliver the DTI's Business Link service, tendered for the contract but was not successful.

BL4L in its time created the first regional Business Link Operator, bringing coherence the the capital's business support and harnessed some £40m per annum in public support for business and enterprise development.

In 2004 the DTI undid the Business Link structures, leaving the central team as 'strategic guidance' and devolving accountability for the Operators to the Regional Development Agencies. The current strategy is to move away from direct delivery of business support, intervention and advice and towards a "brokerage" model, offering 'information, diagnostics and brokerage' - a sort of Citizen's Advice Bureau for business, if you like.

This approach sees a reduction in the amount of public and EU money deployed (now c£20m per annum) but hopefully a leveraged effect which will benefit private sector business support providers.

It's appropriate that a managed service specialist be selected for the contract and BL4L will deliver on the plan for 2006-7, completing its operations and handover.

BL4L has not as yet commented publicly on the LDA's decision and this post does not represent BL4L's or the Board's view.
